The
work taking place in Axminster's historic Thomas Whitty
House located in Silver Street is now complete and
Axminster Heritage Ltd has proudly
launched its exhibition devoted to the development
of the world famous Axminster carpet.
First launched
on Wednesday 2nd July 2008, the exhibition tells the story
of how the market town of Axminster became the home
of this now multi-million pound industry. As well as
describing how carpets were manufactured, it also highlights
where many of the original carpets made by Thomas Whitty
are still in use today in the UK and abroad.
In addition to a genuine Axminster
carpet woven more than 200 years ago, the exhibition includes
a 2005 replica carpet commemorating the first 'Axminster'
of 250 years ago, an original loom and other period artefacts. |

Another
highlight is a short film, shot recently in and around
Axminster by film maker and director Henry Davies,
telling the story of Whitty's life and work.
